OURO PRETO

Ouro Preto is considered by Unesco a Cultural Heritage of Humanity for its importance for the Brazilian Colonial history, architecture and art.

Other towns such as São João del Rei, Congonhas do Campo, Mariana and Tirandentes also have a big importance in the scene of colonial  Brazil. 

 

ITINERARY


Day 1 –       Belo Horizonte

 

Arrival in Belo Horizonte airport and transfer to Hotel. Rest of day free or optional tour.

Day 2 –       Belo Horizonte / Diamantina

 

Depart from Belo Horizonte towards Maquiné Cave. Visit to the cave, seeing the structures formed in the cave: the stalactites and stalagmites. Proceed to Diamantina (290 km away). Rest of day free.

Meals Included: breakfast and lunch

 


Day 3 –       Diamantina

 

After breakfast, full day tour of Diamantina. Visit to the House of Chica da Silva (if it's open on the day), the Municipal Market, Cultural Center Davi Ribeiro, Artcraft Fair, Church of Carmo, Church of São Francisco de Assis, House of Jucelino Kubitschek and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário.

Day 4 –       Diamantina / Ouro Preto

 

After breakfast, transfer to Ouro Preto (380 km away). Rest of day free.

Day 5 –       Ouro Preto

 

After breakfast, visit to Mariana (12 km away). The enchanted city, founded in 1696, was for a short time the capital of Minas Gerais state. It was originally called Royal Village of Our Lady of Carmel. In 1745 it received its present name which was in honor of Queen Maria Ana. A walk down its picturesque streets allows you to see houses which date from the beginning of the XVIII century, with their balconies of wood, iron and even soapstone.  In Minas Gerais Plaza, the churches of São Francisco de Assis with its richly sculptured door, our Lady of Carmel, the City Hall and the Pillory can be found. Transfer back and city tour of Ouro Preto. Visit to the Church of São Francisco de Assis: an example of Brazilian religious architecture, designed by Aleijadinho, with wood and soapstone sculptures by the same artist. Museum of the School of Mines: a complete mineralogical view of Brazil, in addition to displays of geological artifacts from other countries. Church of Nossa Senhora do Pilar: a church that marked the culmination of the Golden Age architecture,with carved works painted entirely in gold. The Oratorio Museum and the Opera House will be visited too, on walks around the streets of this remarkable city. Accommodation and dinner.

Day 6 –       Ouro Preto / Tiradentes

 

After breakfast, proceed to São João del Rei, visiting the beautiful churches of Pilar (1721), Carmo (1733) and São Francisco de Assis (1749). Transfer to Tiradentes. Tiradentes was the leader of the Inconfidência Mineira (1789),a republican movement to free Brazil from the Portuguese domination. Tiradentes was born in this city, was killed during the repression by the Portuguese and became a national hero. Visit to the church of Santo Antonio (1710), Museum of Padre Toledo and the Fountain of São José das Botas (1749).

Day 7 –       Tiradentes / Belo Horizonte

 

After breakfast, visit to Congonhas do Campo, which has important works from the Golden Age of Brazil. The main points of interest are Aleijadinho’s sculptural masterpieces of the twelve Prophets, carved in soapstone and his sculptural representation of the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross), done in polychromatic woodwork. The set of life-sized sculptures is Brazil’s greatest artistic treasure. 

Transfer back to Belo Horizonte.

Accommodation:

Double rooms can have separate beds or not. A third person depending on the hotel has the possibility of using a sofa bed. Consult for children policy.  

                          

GENERAL CONDITIONS

RESPONSIBILITY: Brasil Travel / Melchior & Hodson Ltda and/or agencies involved with the packages, flights and tours shall act only as agents of the tour members in making arrangements for hotels and any other service and do not assume any liability whatsoever for any injury, damage, death, loss, accident or delay to persons or property due to an act of God, default by any hotel, company or person rendering any of services included on the tours or flights.

Furthermore, no responsibility is accepted for quarantine, government restraints, weather or other causes beyond their personal control. No responsibility is accepted for any additional expenses, omissions, delays, re-routing or acts of government authority. The payment for the reservation shall constitute consent to all provisions in the "General Conditions" as published herein.

 

PAYMENT POLICY: The total cost for the services requested must be received at least 30 days prior to guest' arrival in order to prepay and guarantee the reservation. Some hotels and resorts have different payment policies that could involve payments due up to six weeks prior to arrival during specific special dates, or will only accept a reservation with an immediate prepayment.

Brasil Travel will accept VISA or Mastercard Credit/Debit Cards or wire transfers.

The prices are subject to change without notice until reservation is paid for.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations are subject to penalties depending on the hotel and season. Note that in many instances, there is a strict cancellation penalty for those reservations cancelled or for "No-shows" especially during holidays and special dates. Cancellation periods range from three (03) days to forty-five (45) days and cancellation penalties range from one (01) nights' stay to the entire length of stay.

 

NOTES: Our prices include only what is stated in the fax or e-mails sent. Other fees, such as energy, maid service, phone calls, laundry, bellman or any other extra expenses are not included.

For transfers, two (02) pieces of luggage plus one (01) carry-on allowed per person. An additional cost may be charged by driver for any extra additional luggage.
